A Look Under the Hood

A Look Under the Hood

Deciphering ingredient lists and what you should avoid.

If you’re like us, when you see the ingredient list on the back of a bottle or tube, you can go a little crossed-eyed. At Huron, we offer A+ personal care for guys everywhere. We use the best performing and highest quality ingredients that we can while keeping prices in check. For us transparency -- what’s in our product, as well as what’s not -- is really important.

So why all of these “Free-of” claims?

We’ve worked tirelessly to find the right blend of ‘clean’ ingredients (healthy and better for you) and ingredients that actually work. Huron products are 100% vegan, animal/cruelty-free, and we stay away from known or controversial ingredients that have potential to do harm.  As a result, we choose to formulate without parabens, sulfates, silicones, phthalates, and aluminum.

Here’s a run down:

Vegan and Animal-Free.  100% vegan means a product does not contain any animal or animal-derived ingredients. This includes honey, beeswax, lanolin, cholesterol, gelatin and many others. It’s good to note that “vegan” describes the ingredients, rather than the production process, so vegan products can still be tested on animals. (But we’d never do that).

Cruelty-free.  Cruelty-free means a product and its ingredients weren't tested on animals. We love animals, and will never test on them.

Parabens are a group of chemical preservatives used in many cosmetics to keep them fresh and germ-free (usually listed as methyl-, butyl, and propyl-paraben on the ingredient list).  They've been known to disrupt hormones, and have been linked to health issues such as breast cancer. Although the risks are still unclear, (FDA info here), we’re excluding them from all of our products.

Sulfates are detergents or “surfactants” used as cleansing agents to remove dirt and oil, and are found in everything from laundry soap to shampoo to toothpaste. They create that “foaming action” everyone seems to love. Problem is, they can be a bit harsh, with the potential to cause dryness and irritation. Ensuring that both our body wash and face wash were sulfate-free was important to us.

Phthalates are chemical compounds used in everything from plastics to cosmetics to keep materials flexible and pliable. Although the FDA hasn’t found any health risks associated with using phthalates (learn more here), some studies suggest that phthalates -- like parabens -- are hormone disruptors, and can cause biological damage, so we’re not taking any chances.

Silicones are derived from natural silica which undergo extensive chemical processing to form cosmetic polymers.  Their unique properties can improve the feel, appearance, and performance of products. There have been reports that silicones may be harmful to the environment and potentially toxic to non-human organisms. We opted to formulate great feeling and high-performing products without them.

At Huron, we’re constantly learning about new ingredients as we develop products with you in mind, so stay tuned for more. If you ever have any questions about our products, please reach out.
