October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we at Huron are helping to rally that cause. There are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. and fatalities have declined by nearly 40% over the last 25 years. But, as the most common cancer in women worldwide and the second most common cancer overall, it remains a fact of life. In the United States, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This means that, on average, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes in the U.S.
And while breast cancer overwhelmingly affects women, breast cancer knows no age, gender, or race. It’s estimated that around 2,620 American men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. Although extremely rare in men, accounting for around 1% of breast cancer cases in the U.S., men are much less likely to recognize symptoms (such as a lump in the breast tissue.) Men typically wait longer to consult a doctor, resulting in needing more treatment.
By shining a light on preventative measures, early detection, and groundbreaking research, we can all help fight the fight.
Preventative measures lower risk:
You can help reduce your risk of cancer by making healthy choices like eating right, staying active and maintaining a healthy weight. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol. Even low levels of alcohol intake have been linked with an increase in risk. Find out more from The American Cancer Society.
Early detection saves lives:
Some cancers can be found early, before they have had a chance to grow and spread. Studies have shown that regular mammography screenings have lowered the number of women who die from the disease by about 30 percent. Visit Memorial Sloan Kettering for guidelines.
Groundbreaking research:
We support groundbreaking research and for the month of October, we will be donating 5% of sales to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation to support their ongoing efforts to explore medicines and treatments that might lower cancer risk, and ultimately find a cure. Learn more about the researchers, scientists and advancements at BCRF here.
Join us in our efforts to kick cancer’s ass. As a cause that is important to us, our donations will help the BCRF continue to fund research worldwide in the pursuit of a cure for breast cancer.

About The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
BCRF has raised more than half a billion dollars for lifesaving research. Through a unique and streamlined grants program, BCRF seeks out the brightest minds in science and medicine and gives them the necessary resources to pursue their best ideas. As a result, researchers are able to make discoveries and design new approaches to address all aspects of breast cancer—and do so in record time.
